VGBA Explosion #7 - MyNewSoundtrack Triple Play

I'm finally back! For how long? I don't honestly know, but I do bring great tidings of awesome video game music with me! So let's ignore the absence and just leap right into the tasty jams.

For this round of VGBA Explosion, I've chosen to cover a specific artist, MyNewSoundtrack.
This artist is a very different take on the usual format of the kind of music that I review/talk about. Instead of just covering it like rock, metal, or electronica, the artist instead redoes music in various video game styles. I'll get to the examples of this soon enough, but it's something along the lines of chiptunes but... more awesome in what it does and how well it is done!

Now the review here is going to be going over this person's recent album releases, but he has quite a few tracks up on Youtube, so you should definitely check out the channel!

There's quite a bit there to take in and... it is all awesome! Now, if you didn't already click and explore the channel, I'll briefly go over what the artist does.

Like previously stated, most people cover or remix songs through a rock, metal, or electronica styling. True some people explore beyond that, but those three are the most common from what I've seen. MyNewSoundtrack takes random tracks (namely video game but there's a random selection of other music in there) and redoes them using other sound chip systems. Examples of this include Power Rangers theme song done in the styling of Mega Man X music or various Mega Man X themes done through the Sega Genesis sound set. There's a huge variety of what MyNewSoundtrack does, but it's all a really great listen. He has released a few albums in the past, (Mega Man 1 and Mega Man 2 music redone in the style of Mega Man X) but he's finally released a few compilation albums. Let's check them out!

Best MMX Hits (Volume 1)

Type of Album - Covers via Mega Man X sound set.
Favorite Song - Power Rangers Main Theme

The first album (and probably my favorite) is the Best MMX Volume 1. It contains a variety of music from Castlevania, Legend of Zelda, and other classics. On top of that are a few oddball (but very awesome) selections from Mighty No 9 (unreleased), Shovel Knight (awww yeaaaah), and Power Rangers (see Favorite Song). It's one of my favorite listens because the Mega Man X series is easily one of my favorite game series, and the first one is at the very top of that. Many of the songs are pretty close to sounding like a stage from the series too, so that's a nice bonus for me. I could put this album on repeat or next to the actual game (Mega Man X)... and I'd be pretty happy.

Best Genesis Hits (Volume 1)

Type of Album - Covers via the Sega Genesis sound set.
Favorite Song - Spark Mandrill (Mega Man X)

This is a very interesting and different take from the first album I talked about. While the first one focused entirely on one game's sound, this one focuses on the unique and jamming style of an entire console, the Sega Genesis. Funnily enough, many of the tracks on this album are Mega Man and Mega Man X songs. My favorite one listed above is my favorite because it's just a great song. Even before the Sega Genesis modification, Spark Mandrill's got a killer stage track. Give it the Genesis Twist, and the magic is going down in my ears. The remaining selections on this album hit even more of the oddball (but very awesome) with tracks from Touhou, Batman (NES), and Take On Me by A-Ha. This is a very thrilling and fun to listen to album. It's like Sonic has come out to jam for us... Wait a minute.

Best 8-bit Hits (Volume 1)

Type of Album - Covers via 8-bit style (I think it's towards the NES more than anything.)
Favorite Song - Chemical Plant Zone (Sonic 2)

The explosion begins with a band and ends with a slightly smaller bang! Not saying this album is lesser than the other two, but it probably is in third place of the three. Regardless, it's another spectacular edition to the lineup. Now, you might be thinking "Isn't this one quite a bit more chiptune than the others?" The answer is "VERY CLOSE YEAH BUT DIFFERENT!" True, there are people who do "8-bit" covers of songs all over YouTube, but these covers feel quite a bit better than those. They have a very specific style they're going for (I feel NES but might be wrong), and they don't feel like kinda half-assed or generic. They have a lot of depth and feeling put into them. And the selection? It's easily the most varied of the three albums! True it has some of the same items like Sonic, Zelda, and Mega Man, but there's some different choices with titles like Dragon Ball Z Budokai and Mario & Luigi SuperStar Saga. There's even a track from Shantae and Actraiser! A very fun and entertaining listen all around.

These are all great albums and currently on my listening list (also set to repeat), so I highly HIGHLY recommend them! If that's not enough, consider this... Each album is only $1. That's $1 for 15 awesome covers... remixings? reskinnings? However you wish to see it, they're all a huge bargain and super amazing! I look forward to future volumes from MyNewSoundtrack. Hopefully soon...

UNTIL THEN! We always got fairly frequent new releases on the channel like...

PS - Thanks for reading and to any of those who stuck around and came back. Going to give it a shot to write again. No promises though. T-T

News Post! (5/31/2015)

So... It's been some time. It's almost been two months since I've posted anything on here.
We all know I haven't been a very constant poster since I finished up the Final Fantasy series. Even then, I was starting to slack a bit near the end as I got less and less time to play and generally put off getting the post typed up.

Part of me wants to see this blog grow and go further, but the rate at which I'm going plus the actual free time I have to myself... It's not looking good. Every time I come around here to try and post something, I'm either tired, unmotivated, can't think of what to post, or just rather take my free time for me. I applaud those people who do a blog in their off time and do so well. I just can't get things together sometimes...

ANYWAYS! I'm going to try and get things back together soon, but I can't really give a definite of how or when.

I've got a few games I could easily review if I took the time, and there are plenty of albums I've gained since my last real posting. Either way, I'll figure something out and hopefully get my act together within the next week.

Wish me luck, and let's hope things can go up from here!

If you're still around and checking this... You sir/madam/other are just a huge trooper, and I thank you for sticking around. Until the next post...

VGBA Explosion #6 - Random 2015 Purchases

For this round of VGBA Explosion, I've decided to hit up a random selection of Bandcamp items I've had on the wishlist. I'll buy several items from my Wishlist and then list 3 or 4 of them that turn out to be winners! Now that this has been said... This is what won!

Do a Barrel Roll! - Boss Rush
Available on Bandcamp ($7)
Band - Do a Barrel Roll!
SitesBandcamp
Type of Album - Video Game Remix.
Genres - Rock. Metal. Funk.
Favorite Song - Those Who Still Fight On More Further (FFVII boss battle theme)

The band, Do a Barrel Roll!, is a random group I learned of that was going to MAGFest 13. (I didn't go myself... but I will attempt to someday!) I honestly didn't know anything about them beyond that. Their website seems down at the moment, but their album is still very available through Bandcamp. It's their first full album and was released early last year. But... what do I think? It's a really good start. They've got a great sound and decent selection here. I will eagerly await more of their material in the future! It's not a free album though, but it only costs you $7 for 9 tasty tracks. Get at it!

Droidekka - Droidekka
Available on Bandcamp ($4)
Band - Droidekka
Sites - Bandcamp
Type of Album - Original Video-Game Inspired Music.
Genres - Reggae with a twist of electronica.
Favorite Song - Blasto!

I've seen Droidekka a few times before down in Texas. (Oklahoma doesn't really have a video game music scene...) They're a pretty cool group, and they do quite a few video game covers live. As for their self-titled album... Not really any video game covers here. There's still a nice sound going on here though! It's got this reggae, electronica mixture that does them quite a bit of good. It's a good album for a kinda low-down, calm music. Something you could enjoy grooving on in the background. For $4? It's a cheap way to support a great band. Give them a shot for a different sound.
Here's a video I got of them when I went down to Texas for Party Madness 64.

Now on to the final album for this explosion...

My New Soundtrack - Mega Man 2X
Available on Bandcamp (Pay what you want)
Artist - MyNewSoundtrack
Sites - Bandcamp
           Youtube
Type of Album - Video Game Remake/Remix. Will explain further down.
Genres - Chiptune.
Favorite Song - Air Man and Quick Man.

With the final album, I bring you yet another quite different idea! The artist who goes by MyNewSoundtrack (real name is Luis Sies) has spent their time making a huge assortment of video game covers making use of another game's sound style! In most cases, he uses the Mega Man X sound chip set to recreate other songs. He's got quite a selection on Youtube, and you should really explore that when you get a chance.

As for this album though, he focuses purely on all the music from Mega Man 2 and remakes it to sound like it was done with Mega Man X style. It's a very interesting and often quite awesome take on the series's music. Every song is redone here from the title music, to all the robot masters, and even the stage select and new weapon bits. It's a really awesome album, and part of me would like to hear this music while I play Mega Man 2. (See how well it syncs and all.) The best part of all? This album is "Name Your Price" and can be obtained for free if you feel such is fair. Personally, I'd recommend a few dollars towards a guy who does a great job. Regardless, this album wraps up my trio of random new buys!

And that's all I've got for now. Stay tuned and be prepared for more fun times at Recurring Fantasy!

Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae - Final Thoughts

A friend of mine said I should reserve Final Fantasy Type-0. Now while I'm not always big on the side titles of Final Fantasy, I trusted him with his opinion and reserved it. I'm not sure if I'll play it as a blog entry, but we shall see when that time comes. Until then... There's a nice little bonus in the Final Fantasy Type-0 HD [Day One Edition]. You get a fancy voucher code that allows you to download the demo for Final Fantasy XV. It's a special demo titled "Episode Duscae."

Now, while I'm not following Final Fantasy XV like a crazed fanatic, I am still interested to see where the game is going. Thus... You're going to get a glimpse of my playthrough of the demo!

Final Fantasy XV Episode Duscae - Final Thoughts

Now... This is quite exciting. We're finally getting a glimpse into the next (main lineup) title of the Final Fantasy series. This could be a pretty big day seeing as the blog is... a bit lax in updates. For now though, let's see what the demo holds for us.

The demo begins with a party of four guys. (I don't remember their names at the moment...) Our car has run into some problems, so we need to make 25,000 gil in order to pay for repairs. Not too far along, we spot a bulletin board with a bounty poster. There's a local monster (the classic BEHEMOTH!) that is causing trouble. They're offering 24,000 gil for whoever brings it down. The group figures this is the best way to earn money for repairs... and then the demo truly begins!

A fellow party member offers to show me the ropes on fighting, and I take him up on the offer. So let's get into how the game plays! Since I brought it up, let's begin with the combat system.

The combat of Final Fantasy XV reminds me of Final Fantasy XII, but it brings in some different elements to play. It's not the MMO-style of attacks where you "set it and forget it", but it isn't quite a hack n' slash action RPG either. It melds the two together to form a style of combat that feels unique.

To try and keep this simple and concise (the game does so as well), you have two states of character. You are either Attacking or Defending. However, your character is always "attacking" if you aren't defending. Defending consumes MP, but you will dodge almost anything thrown at you. The drawback is that every successful dodge drains your MP. This keeps you from simply spamming it forever. You automatically regenerate MP and HP as you move around, and you can increase the regeneration rate by taking cover during battle. (Basically you defend next to something you can stand behind.) On top of this, you can even use the Defend to Parry some attacks. I never quite got the hang of Parry, but if you manage to, it comes with fantastic results! You knock the enemy back and smack them for some major damage.

Attacking is also pretty straight forward but has some interesting complexities. You have a selection of weapons that your character uses based on how it is equipped. You have several slots of varied "attack actions" or however you want to put it. You assign a weapon to one of these slots, and your character auto-magically swaps to them based on what form of attack is being launched. Examples include a weapon for Countering, one for Final Strikes, a Multi-Strike weapon, and several more. I didn't write down or memorize the slots here. On top of this, each weapon grants a special attack, and you can switch between the special attacks during combat. The demo gave a lance with Jump, a sword with a spinning attack, a small blade with a Drain attack to replenish HP, a spear with a lunge-style of strike, and a few more I can't remember because I didn't use them.

Beyond things described above, you do have a few other additional actions. Of course, you do have an items command for usage of item things. Demo only really offered potions and phoenix downs though. The most interesting action you can do is the Warp. It is used to jump to an enemy during combat or leap to a tall ledge to get a breather (boosts regeneration like cover does). It's a really nice opening attack ability and can help reach a far off enemy. That being said, It also got me into trouble here and there. I warped a few times when I didn't mean to, and it wasn't always a super success like I'd hoped. That and very few spots in the demo let you use it as a brief escape.

Now to rate the combat overall... It's fun and challenging, but it could definitely use some work. The only thing I can complain about is the lack of a true lock-on system. If we're going to have live combat, we need a better way to lock-on. It lets you lock onto an enemy in the demo, but it doesn't FOLLOW him. Meaning you have to turn the camera around whenever an enemy goes off screen. This was made even worse when facing one of the few enemies in the demo. (A fast wolf-style enemy who keeps running around.) Pinpointing the enemy tended to require using the Warp attack to get up close, and sometimes even then, you'd only get a hit or two before they ran off again while you try to clumsily follow them with your camera.

I do see hope for the combat and would love some improvements. Your AI characters generally work well, but I do hope you will be able to command them a little. The little guy with guns tends to do his own thing and run up close rather than shoot from a distance. The other two seem to be capable though, and you can revive downed characters by running up and slapping them as they are bleeding out. (You have time to revive/be revived before being completely out of the running.)

Beyond fighting, the demo has a fairly large area to explore. It's a huge, beautiful massive field full of deliciously pretty environment. There's a lot of field to cover, and plenty of monsters to fight. The demo only had a few different kinds of enemies outside of the big boss monster, a Behemoth called Deadeye. The monsters simply walk about the field. You can battle them (or run away) at your leisure really, much like Final Fantasy XII. There are also random items littered around the map... Items that you can pick up and sell for the monies. (Seeing a lot of FFXII in this game for sure.)

The game definitely won't lose in either the graphics or exploration department. There's a lot to see and do in just the small field you are given during the demo. They even have a cave you can explore. (And doing so nets you the awesome summon that is Ramuh.) The cave exploration was probably my favorite part of the entire ordeal. Running through the tunnels and having to deal with hordes of goblins. Of course, the little bastards could steal and kept taking all my potions... It was pretty challenging too, and I actually got my first Game Over here.

It's nice to see a Final Fantasy really bring up the difficulty aspect as well. It's hard to bring a difficulty factor into a JRPG without making the solution "overlevel" or "abuse the system". I feel they got a good mixture of challenge without making it feel ridiculous.

Of course, your real question might be "What about the story and characters Daniel!?!" Well... in all honesty, I didn't really get attached to those. In the demo's defense though, you don't get a lot from them. The demo seems to be more about showing off the gameplay rather than the characters or their story. You do get the character's name in-game, and their dialogue gives them a bit of depth. The story is fairly non-existent though outside of the whole "collect money to repair car" bit.

I don't absolutely love the characters in there, but I didn't really get a chance to know them either. I figure I'll get to know more about them later. Hopefully they all develop into something worth caring about! Now, I could keep going on and on here, but I think you've gotten a good idea of what there is offered so far. Let's see if I can sum up my experience...

Final Fantasy XV - Episode Duscae is a great insight into what we're going to get when Final Fantasy VX delivers. There's a huge amount of promise here. There are a few bugs and issues here and there, but they are offering a survey to all those who try out the demo. I figure when the game finally comes around to us, we'll have something much better! I do look forward to the new Final Fantasy title... And when that day comes, my blog will fervently reopen with more posts as I cover my journey through... whatever that world is called. UNTIL THEN! Look forward to another update coming.

I've finally got a game planned. Stay tuned to find out more. Thanks for reading and hoped you enjoy this insight.

Side Post!

As life goes on, we as people can always find something to talk about... or in this case, I've got something to complain about! It's nothing new if you really think about it, but here's my take on...

Recurring Fantasy Side Post Theater Proudly Presents...
Modern Video Games:
Less Video, More Game!

Before we get anywhere, just stop that thought right now. Like anybody, I'm allowed to have an opinion on things. This isn't going to be me harping about how old games are superior to newer games. It's not going to be that, so just sit back and read on.

I enjoy video games. I really do. It may not seem like it, but I've almost always enjoyed video games. I started at the young age with just a simple Game Boy. A lot of people I knew had full consoles to themselves, but I had to piggyback on others for the console. Eventually I got my very first console (a Nintendo 64) and life grew from there...

I've played quite a few games since then. More than I could count without having to really ponder on it all. Gaming has and will hopefully always be some part of my life. I like everything about games. The look and feel of graphics and an atmosphere as you play and explore. The music and sounds that help immerse you into the game's world. The action and adventure experienced as I work my way through gameplay. Video games are a great way for me to have fun, make friends, enjoy life, and inspires me in so many different ways. I truly do love video games... or I certainly used to.

This isn't saying my love for games is gone. I still enjoy gaming in general, but I feel like gaming isn't even remotely what it used to be. I'm not talking about multiplayer or all the social networking involved in the gaming industry now. It's how most games are going the route of graphics with an overly convoluted (non-RPG games) and massive number of cutscenes.

What happened to keeping the story short and simple or integrated within the gameplay? I mean... I shouldn't have to stop every four to five minutes for a small cutscene and a handful of lines. (I realize that twinge of irony with this being an RPG blog and complaining about too much story... but I'll get to it soon.) I miss all those times where video games were purely about the gameplay. Where you pick up, click a few screens, and then you are playing! Maybe there's an intro to explain the basic story. Hell, maybe the story is part of the title screen as it loads. There's a time and place for story weaving, and it's not all the damn time!

I guess it comes down to this thought... I want to pick up a game, learn the controls quickly and concisely, and then get going! I don't need a giant tutorial spanning more than 30 minutes of gameplay. I don't always care about this long and interweaving tale of betrayal and woe. It's those times where you want to hop in the cockpit of your ship and start blasting the enemy! Aliens, monsters, enemy soldiers, nazis, and so much more used to be the crazy and faceless (but evil) enemies of the screen. The story was interlaced here and there, but it didn't interrupt or remove gameplay in the process.

Granted, it seems like I'm talking about action and adventure games over RPGs, but even RPGs seem to be losing their edge in a way. (Bit further down.)

This problem feels on the rise for me as games aim to be graphically pretty and superior rather than having balanced and fun gameplay. I don't know about most people, but I'll gladly overlook some subpar graphics in favor of fast, fun, and tight gameplay. It seems that Triple A game design has come to a horrible place of overadvertising their often generic game that releases and ends up not remotely living up to the hype... Or worse, they release something that is broken and is barely a game at all.

And the saddest thing... Is the slow and lessening of RPGs. I mean, they do still exist and many are released, but I haven't really felt the same magic with them as I did with many older titles. You get a few titles here and there like Bravely Default and Child, but anything beyond that just hasn't really been my style. I bought several PS Vita JRPGs and... I didn't really enjoy them. I couldn't get into the characters and the often ridiculous or uninteresting stories. On top of this, a lot of places are moving to the Action RPG style. Nothing against it, but Action RPGs seem to be like a dime a dozen anymore. There's so many of them, and only a few of them truly shine through.

I feel I used to look forward to new games coming out, but more and more I feel either unimpressed or just pure betrayal. They promise more than they deliver, or the game is so much video that it's more of an interactive movie than a video game.

It's not impossible to deliver a game with actual gameplay. Many companies (and indie developers) are delivering them all the time. Hell, my game of the year last year was Shovel Knight. A small group used Kickstarter to deliver a retro-style game that we all both wanted and needed! It was fun, easy to get into, challenging, and just felt like the good days of gaming. More and more I look at the crowdfunded games or the independently made games as my new source of "true" games.

When it comes down to it, I could probably summarize my point of this post into a few basic rules they should follow...

  1. Graphics are not godliness.
  2. Make sure the game doth work.
  3. Thou story need not be complex to be good.
  4. Jack of All Trades is a Master of Nothing.
    1. To reiterate, focus on ONE or TWO kinds of gameplay. Don't branch out because then you end up having a pile of terrible varied gameplay rather than one FOCUSED type.
  5. Mini-Games rarely bring the joy intended.
  6. Gameplay is king.
  7. Above all else, the game should be fun.
And that's all I have to say. Pardon the long winding talk that sounds of angry retro gaming, but I promise it is not. I have hopes for many games that are out there... Just not as much hope as my younger self would have liked to hear. Thanks for reading and feel free to comment about your own personal thoughts on this matter!

VGBA 20 - Boar Knight

Legend of the Boar Knight
A Grand Story + Fantastic Video Game Covers = This Album!
Band - Careless Juja
Type of Album - Original story mixed with video game covers.
Genres - Alternative rock plus accordion.
Favorite Tracks - In no particular order...
  • Songs
    • Matoya the Witch - Final Fantasy 1
    • Title Medley - Mega Man Battle Network 1, 2, 3.
    • Sword Search - Link's Awakening
  • Chapters
    • Chapter 7 - The Hard Sell (Part 2)
    • This Concludes Side One
    • Chapter 16 - Cheater Can't Be Choosers
Review - Once again, I've been struck by the great presence of the Careless from the awesome duo of Careless Juja. He came along and slipped me an early release copy so I could give a review of another one of their fine albums. Nothing more to add here, so let's hop right into it!

The Legend of the Boar Knight is a two CD album featuring video game coverss alongside an original story, full of various video game references. It sounds strange and different, but that's far from what it should be called! So that I can be fair to both parts of this album, I figure I should review both portions separately. (That is, take a shot at both the great music contained within as well as the story that is being told.) Let's start with the story and swing back around to the music.

The story of the Boar Knight is the tale of a boar named Nathaniel. He journeys throughout the land in order to defeat the evil that abounds. Lichs, Dragons, Hipsters, and much more block Nathaniel's path to defeating the ultimate evil... an Undead Butcher! There's a lot of variety and game references contained throughout. That should be a given of course, but on top of that is still a lot of great jokes and humor. The Narrator is a very entertaining personality, and he even teaches us some random grammar lessons here and there. (Something many of us could probably use...)

It's a very entertaining and well written story overall. If there were a larger and more detailed version of Legend of the Boar Knight, I'd read it to get the full story. The only problem I had... The story is neat and all, but after the first several listens, you almost want to skip the story and jump into the music. (Much like they discussed in the track "This Concludes Side One".) I still listen to them every go through the album, but I'm generally tempted to skip and keep going.

Regardless of my minor complaint, I'd still say it is a fairly strong story with lots of great humor and good points. I'd rather listen to this than read some of the things I see every day. All in all, the story gets a pass in my book. And you best not forget... We still get to enjoy all that fantastic music!

In between all the entertaining story segments you get your face blasted off with some amazing video game remixed covers! Of all the bands/groups/artists I've heard in the video game band genre, I'd say Careless Juja does the best about their variety of game music selection. We get your daily dose of Legend of Zelda and Castlevania next to random and awesome and uncommon titles like Mega Man Battle Network, Pheonix Wright, King's Quest, and Rogue Legacy. It's a smorgasbord of video game music!

Even beyond the excellent selection given here, they show off their talents even further (Inside album joke - Learned something from the album after all!) with their skills and instrument capability. Each song is carefully covered and further improved through the various use of the accordion and many other instruments. They really match the beat and flow of every song. For me, each track is an explosion into a past video game venture (a nostalgia bomb of sorts).

That being said, I do wish a few of the songs were slightly longer. And that's it for any remote form of negativity to be had with the music. Nuff said.

A special note before I wrap up this review though... Holy cow there are a lot of guests here! I know that a lot of the voices were done by Juja, but there's a lot of guest voices included as well. I directly recognized Brentalfloss's voice (and double checked in their credits) during the Shop Salesman bit in Chapter 6 and 7. I don't recognize everybody on their list, (Available on the bandcamp page as of right now.) Beyond the voices contained within is a plethora of instrumental guests. I know a few of the people on the list. Brandon Strader, Lauren the Flute, and... that's it actually. I don't recognize any of the other artists directly, but I bet I've heard their material before. (Most likely on a previous Careless Juja album!) /end special note

The Legend of the Boar Knight is the album you didn't know you wanted. It's got a great story. It's got great video game music. It's the all-in-one package with an explosion of greatness. There's a lot of material to get through, but it's more than worth your time. With enough love and laughs to get you through the evening, Careless Juja (and a pile of guest musicians) has brought us another winner!

Pros - Original story with fun jokes and a lot of wit. Huge variety of video game music contained throughout. Well done covers. Huge list of fantastical instrumental and vocal guest stars. It's everything you wanted in a video game cover album and more!
Cons -  It's hard to want to listen to the story tracks every time you go through the album. Some of the tracks are pretty short, and I wish they were longer. (So I could rock out more!)

The album will drop on March 7th. I've already pre-ordered my copy, and you should get on down and get yours too! Thanks for the read and I'll see you next time... ON RECURRING FANTASY!

VGBA 19 - Heartbeats in Hyperspace

Heartbeats in Hyperspace
Funky beats + Electronica + Space setting + ???? = PROFIT!!!
Buy it here

Band - Crunk Witch
Sites -
Type of Album - Original Electronica.
Genres - Electronica. Rock. Chiptune. Dubstep.
Favorite Songs - Moonbase Blues and Clash Of The Droids.

Review - I realize doing two groups in a row that are video-game-like but not actually covering video game stuff is silly... However, I'm doing it anyways. Despite these reviews being Video Game Band focused, I don't mind branching out to some highly related bands, like electronica and chiptunes, that deserve some attention and love. I wouldn't bring this to your attention if I didn't think it was worth your time. And guess what? Crunk Witch fits that exact bill.

Now, up until a little while ago (around a week or so from this post's post date), I only knew Crunk Witch's name and hadn't actually given their music a shot yet. I regret not looking into them earlier. I saw them live alongside a favorite/friend of mine, Doug Funnie. (I've reviewed his material not too long ago right here.) The group is just a two person act consisting of one Brandon Miles and one Hannah Colleen. They seemed like delightful people and put on a pretty dang good show, despite the venue's lack of... I don't know what it was supposed to be. Interesting enough music that I'm glad I picked up a few of their albums. Enough about the people and places though, let's jump into the music!

Crunk Witch brings a very unexpected sound to the table. I'll be honest. I had no idea what their sound would be. Based on their name, I expected something a little more... crunk I guess? Like rap with some heavy wubs or hardcore dance music. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WAS EXPECTING! IT's like some kind of strange milkshake made with chiptunes, dubstep, punk, rock, and a couple other flavors. Despite this sounding like a strange shake, the flavor that came out was something not only different but really good and quite tasty. The best comparison I could think of was something like Professor Shyguy but with a dash of punk mixed in.

From the album's very first song, you truly get a feeling of being blasted into space. You explode into the atmosphere on a tasty chiptune-ary and then thrown into a great space battle with dubsteping. You almost can't help but want to get on down to the music. (Already beginning to see the reason for the name Crunk Witch...) There's so much beat and rhythm that you can feel it wash over your body as you try to hold back breaking down. As each wave of sounds hits you, you can taste all of the flavors of the music contained inside. It's pretty dang tasty to me, but it's not for everybody.

Even beyond the great beats and sound, you still get some interesting and catchy lyrics. It's not hard to take a great beat and ruin it with vocals and lyrics, but these guys hit a really great mix between the two. Each track comes and goes with its own little story of adventures through space and time. There's a lot of romance-based ones, but that's a given considering the name and all. (Not a bad thing either!) Heartbeats in Hyperspace comes with a lot of story  The adventure through love and space is quite visible. You've got heroes, robots, bandits, lots of love, love spats, betrayal, intrigue, and still rocking with that killer beat. And when the final track comes to a close on Hyper Magic... You get this ending credits vibe from it and almost hate to see the journey finally come to an end... NOW!

Would I say this album is worth your time? Very much so.
Would I say that Crunk Witch is worth your time? Incredibly yes.
Thus, you should go out and scrap up a little Crunk Witch to get down and boogie with!

Pros - A very space-tastic album with a very incredible and original sound. Good rhythm and beat. Great vocals with clever and catchy lyrics.
Cons - Not much here if you can't accept the crazy milkshake of music and style contained within. I eagerly await more things from them!

VGBA 18 - The Cover Up

WELL! The original plan was to have this a few days after the release, but then I completely dropped the ball. Here it is regardless though!

The Cover Up
The Protomen are covering up something... classic rock!
The best I could find for album art at the moment.
Buy the album here!

Band - The Protomen
Sites - Home. Facebook.
Type of Album - Rock cover album.
Genres - Rock. Metal. Things along that line.
Favorite Song - The Trooper

Review - Time for something a little different! For those who don't know, The Protomen are a video game band of sorts, but rather than cover material from games, like most bands I review, they went out and crafted an original video game rock opera of sorts based on the Mega Man series. (Thus the name Protomen taken from the name Protoman.)

Now, generally the material The Protomen produce is original and goes kind of all over the place with genre. (Generally sticks to something of an 80s rock sounds though.) In more recent years though, they have been playing music covers and even released a couple cover albums. The first one was A Night of Queen. It was a live show of Queen covers. Great stuff! Definitely go give it a shot. And while we slowly wait for them to complete the epic tale of The Protomen in Act III... We are currently given a small taste of tasty Protomen beats with The Cover Up.

This cover album is filled to the brim with quite a few great and even some lesser known (to me) classic hits. For ease, I'll list what tracks are on here plus their original artist.
  1. Pick Up*
  2. Because The Night - Patti Smith Group
  3. Princes of the Universe - Queen
  4. Mr. Roboto - Styx
  5. No Easy Way Out - Robert Tepper
  6. Last Stop*
  7. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
  8. I Drove All Night - Cyndi Lauper
  9. Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler
  10. Hunted*
  11. The Trooper - Iron Maiden
  12. I Still Believe (Great Design) - The Call
  13. Results*
  14. Danger Zone - Kenny Loggins
  15. Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground) - Mike + The Mechanics
* - These are skits.

It's a really diverse selection of songs. I only knew half of the tracks original artists and had to look up the rest. It's nice to see a group try to look around and pick a variety when they do something like this. It's the same awesomeness that came out of the Queen cover album. True, they did pick some well known and liked Queen, but they also went out of their way and picked a few lesser known (but still awesome) tracks.

Honestly? I don't have much more to say about this album. The only true negative I have to say... It's not Act 3! But if you are a Protomen fan, you know they are getting close to finishing it. They've been working on it for a while now... only 6 years. Like many fans, I've just been eager to get my ears on that new tasty album....

ANYWAYS! Beyond that, this is still a great album. Definitely worth a listen for those who enjoy some classic rock mixed in with a few extras. It's also got some bits for the true Protomen fans as well. On top of it all, you can get yourself a tape cassette (you read that right) copy of it alongside your digital copy for only $10! Do yourself a favor and get this great album while you wait in anticipation for Act 3.

Pros - Another great release from the legendary Protomen. Really well done covers of some classic rock songs. Still manage to throw in some story bits even among all the great covers.
Cons - It's not Act 3.

Random Post!

I've got another RPG Review in the works, and I'm still deciding what album to review next. (There's just too many to review!) Thus... Going to share a small post of a project I'm working on.

I call it... Project Dreamfall!
(Name was randomly decided and doesn't really reflect what's going down.)

I recently acquired an extra Super Nintendo. It worked, but it was dirty looking. I was happy to have the extra Super Nintendo... but the case bothered me. For those who don't know, Super Nintendos were made with a kind of plastic that yellows quite horribly with age. (Lots of things were made with that kind of plastic and have the same issue.) After some thought, I decided to try and fix the problem. I went on eBay and bought a broken Super Nintendo with a good case. See below for the comparison.

Quite a damn difference...

A screwdriver and some time later... and the cases were swapped! However, I noticed something about the broken Super Nintendo. The only problem seemed to be the power port on the back. I looked it up, and buying a new one was pretty easy (eBay again). Installing just requires some time, a few screws, and a basic soldering skill. I purchased lots of soldering stuff and got to work!

Before!
After!

With the spot repaired, I felt pretty awesome. I mean... Sure, it was a simple job and pretty easy, but it was the first time I'd ever soldered something. This got me into a real big kick, and now I'm trying to fix up game consoles. Super Nintendo consoles are pretty easy to fix really. There's a good assortment of easy-to-fix problems, and I'm going to try and fix what I can.

On top of that, I looked up some different mods and things I can do to the Super Nintendos. Of the things available, I found that...

  1. Changing the Power LED Color
  2. Painting the console
  3. Modding to play Super Famicom (Japanese) titles
I realize that isn't much, but they are some pretty cool improvements. My personal SNES (going to abbreviate it from here on) is just the original color, but it can play Super Famicom titles and has a lovely blue LED for the power. Maybe nothing to go crazy about, but it's pretty cool looking.

Now, I'm still waiting on my batch of LEDs to come in. (Ordered on Amazon... apparently from China. Looking at a week or more.) However, I have finished painting the extra SNES in my possession. So here they are! The fruits of the last two days of labor!

Salamander SNES (Supposed to look like the Warhammer 40k Salamanders)

Iron Man SNES (Kinda sorta but not really)
Yes, I realize that they aren't too much to go crazy about, but I'm pretty proud of myself. I learned while doing the Salamander and made improvements while painting Iron Man. The paint jobs aren't perfect, but I tried my best to make them look nice. I will say that I will probably not paint controllers again. They're easy to mess up, and if you aren't careful about the layers, you mess up the buttons. Seriously... Be careful if you attempt to paint controllers and the buttons thereof. You end up with buttons that stick and... I really don't have to say more here.

Now, that's really all I had. I'm figuring to do a bit more retro console work from here on out, so expect a post like this once in a while. Yes, I am kind of trying to get away with filler material here, but I'm also indecisive of what I should review next as far as games and video game albums go.

And that's all I've got for now. Look forward to more stuff.. COMING SOON!

VGBA 17 - Player Select

Warning, this post is going to probably be a bit swear-y compared to my norm. Just know that it's all in fair relation to the album at hand. Otherwise... ENJOY!

Player Select
Starbomb Returns With a Blast of Profanity and Swearing Fun!
Buy it on multiple sites! *Links below*

Band - Starbomb
Sites - Home page.  Facebook.
Purchase Sites
Type of Album - Video Game Comedy Parody.
Genres - Rock. Rap. Comedy. Parody. And quite a bit more really.
Favorite Song/Songs - Smash! and Minecraft Is for Everyone

Review - Now, I'm going to take on something a little wilder/profanity filled than usual. I already warned you at the top of the post, but I'll restate it here. Things are going to get a bit swear-y, but it's all in favor of and with the album to be reviewed.

Now, for those who don't know, Starbomb is a musical group composed of three people. There's Egoraptor (his Youtube channel and Game Grumps) and the comedy musical duo of Ninja Sex Party. (Haven't really listened to any of their stuff, so don't have an opinion ATM.) And now things are going to get weird for you...

The trio combine their awesome abilities and vast talents to create some hardcore kickass shit! We get the fuckin' hilarious video game nonsense next to your killer raps and dope music jams. Unlike those other unmanly bands, we get a face-splosion of tasty tunes to satisfy our thirst (and lust) for awesome-ality. Let's be honest. Your face might not be able to handle all these songs, so you should probably leave the blog now before you lose the ability to not have a melted face.

Where was I... OH YEAH! THIS ALBUM IS PRETTY AWESOME! You've got a great selection of jams from many games. (Out of character for a moment, the songs aren't quite as based on the video games they represent as most video game bands I review. Still great music though.) Player Select is the second album  We got all the basic shit you need for a video game album. Here's a list of all the damn fine tracks on this hot ass album.

  1. Intro
  2. Smash! (Smash Bros)
  3. Robots in Need of Disguise (Transformers)
  4. The Hero of Rhyme (Legend of Zelda)
  5. Toad Joins the Band (Mario skit)
  6. The New Pokerap (Pokemon)
  7. Glass Joe's Title Fight (Punch Out!)
  8. Mortal Kombat High (Think this is self-explanatory)
  9. Inky's Lament (Pac-Man)
  10. God of No More (God of War)
  11. Atari Mystery Hour (Skit)
  12. Minecraft is for Everyone (Again, self-explanatory)
  13. The Simple Plot of Metal Gear Solid (Self. Explanatory.)
  14. Outro
Check out that fuckin' awesome list of all dem tunes. You're thinking... How come I haven't heard of this amazing shit yet? Because you are still here! You should get out there and start listening! We'll start off with one of the first songs revealed for the album... Smash! (Video incoming...)

(Really hope that video posts right... Also going to cut out the swearing bit and get to the point.) If that got you going, you might check out the rest of the album's songs. Most of them are floating around Youtube at this point.

Overall, Player Select is pretty funny and surprisingly well done for what it's aiming to be. That song Smash! is a pretty good example of what takes place throughout the album. The album is going for a mixture of electronica-80s-ish rock-rap that is well written, great sound, and fun to listen to. I will say that regardless of how well a light I put this in, this album will either immediately entertain you or just make you shake your head.

The material they go over ranges from fairly tame to kinda raunchy at times. It's never going to make you go "DID THEY JUST SAY THAT!?!", but something to keep in mind while giving the album a listen. Lots of great tunes with some good comedy covering all of your basic video game universe.

Outside of the profanity contained within, the only problem I can have with this album... It's really not as great as the first one. There's a few reasons I have for this. It is mostly personal opinion above all else, but I think there is one thing worth mentioning. There's a few small elements that require a listening of the first album, self-titled Starbomb, to fully get. It's mostly small jokes, but there are a few songs that build off songs from the previous album. Beyond that? I just like the first album more. Can't really make any kind of argument here...

Hell, if you like what you've heard so far, get both of them! They're both pretty entertaining and great listens. However, I would say get Starbomb first and then come back around to Player Select. Regardless, I see a bright future for Starbomb and eagerly await more from them!

Pros - Overall, very funny album with catchy well-written lyrics. Plenty of comedy. Interesting mixture of electronica, 80s rock, and rap. Bitchin' tunes. Just overall lots of fun to listen to.
Cons - If profanity bothers you, just stop now. Not quite the punch of the first album. Many of the songs require knowledge from the first album to get.

Call of the Night - Chapter 3

Okay, so the book project is currently at a close. I was hopeful in the beginning, but I ran into issues during Chapter 3 here when I tried to put more into it than I really should have. I was getting all these details put in, but I didn't really have plans for those details. Thus they would be too much to include and then I got disinterested and would have to just completely restart at this point. (I can sometimes get easily frustrated.) Thus... I'm releasing what all I had finished before I stopped.

Enjoy what little there is of Chapter 3 of Call of the Night!

Call of the Night

Chapter 3 - In Search of Time

Rest never came that night for Noldor. His time of meditation wasn't going well. He kept seeing images in his head of the day everything happened. On top of this, he also had bad feelings of the road ahead. It seemed like some small part of him wanted him to stop his journey now. Noldor wasn't sure how to take this, but he figured that maybe it was just his self-doubt that this would work. He had to push past this feeling and make it work though! They would find Grandell, and he would be able to help Noldor fix it all. When he finally conquered his self-doubt, he awakened to find that several hours had passed.
Noldor saw that the paladin was still at watch. Andrew was sitting near the fire, so Noldor got up and joined up. The human smiled at him as he approached. "Are you feeling any better Noldor?" The elf nodded at his question and answered. "I am much better now, but you had best get some sleep while you can. We've got a long ride ahead of us, and we need you at full strength." Andrew got up from his seat and went over to an empty spot. As he rolled out his bedroll, he looked back at Noldor and said, "I didn't see anything on my watch, but I still get the strangest feeling that something is watching us. Do keep your eyes open Noldor. Maybe you'll notice something I did not. With that said, I'm going to try to sleep now."
Before Noldor could say another word, Andrew had already fallen asleep. Despite his suspicions, it certainly didn't take long for the paladin to pass out. And once again, Noldor was alone with his thoughts, and just like the previous day, Noldor didn't like to be alone with his thoughts. He kept going over the events in his head and wondered what he could have changed. Maybe if he hadn't left that day, or maybe if he had ridden faster back to town. Things could have been different! Noldor thought on these past events mostly in regret, but he was also considering them for what lay ahead. He wasn't sure how Grandell would fix things, but Noldor figured he needed to have a plan. As much as it pained him to think on it, he knew the answer to it all lie in the past.
Although Noldor was caught up in his own thinking, he didn't fail to notice that something was off about their campsite. He couldn't tell from where, but he certainly felt a presence around him. Whatever was out there didn't mean them any harm though, but he wanted to find out what or who it was. Being careful to not wake his companions, Noldor took only his sword as he ventured out into the woods. Being an elf, Noldor had low light vision, so he could easily see even late at night. His eyes told him there wasn't anything around, but regardless of this, he could still sense something around him.
Noldor walked around for about an hour, but he could never seem to spot whatever this strange presence was. Whatever it was, it didn't seem interested in Noldor finding it, so he figured it was time to head back to camp. As Noldor had turned around to head back, he heard a strange voice calling out to him. "Don't leave yet Young One..." The elf had never heard any sound quite like it. The voice had a strangely melodic yet almost instrumental tune. Noldor turned around to see who the voice belonged to. He didn't see anything immediately behind him, but then he looked up and saw what the voice had came from.
What was looking down at Noldor was a one of the strangest creatures he had ever seen. It looked to be a female elf, but apart from her general build, she was quite different looking. Instead of skin, she had bark covering her body, and her hair appeared to be weaved out of leaves, vines, and flowers. Even with these plant-like features, her eyes easily stood out the most to Noldor. Her eyes shone with a bright silver glow that seemed to permeate the darkness of the night. The mysterious creature leapt down from the trees and slowly approached him. "Greetings Young One."
The elf wasn't sure how to reply but finally said, "Greetings." The creature didn't immediately respond to him though, so Noldor went ahead and asked. "Are... Are you one of the Wood Elves?" The creature nodded and spoke again. "Yes Young One. I am what you mortals refer to as a Wood Elf. My people and I have been watching your group since you first came into contact with the woods." Noldor was a bit disturbed to hear that they have been watched all this time, and he was even more confused to how they managed this without being detected. Sure, Noldor had felt the strange presence since he got here, but he could never quite tell what was causing it. The elf did have one big question at the forefront of his mind though.
"If you've been watching all this time, why have you waited until now to reveal yourself?" The wood elf looked over at him briefly and then continued to walk around as it spoke. "We have always watched over those who cross through the forest. Many come but few respect the woods for what it is." The wood elf went to a nearby tree and stopped for a moment. Her mouth moved but only strange wooden creaking noises came out. Once she stopped make the sound, she looked over and said, "These trees are my people." Noldor wasn't sure how to take this answer and inquired further. "What do you mean?" The wood elf simply stared at him for the next several minutes and seemed to be staring into Noldor's very soul.
Finally, she started explaining. "Long long ago, when my people and your people were very young, we were all part of one elven race. When the demons invaded our world, the elves were split on how to deal with it. Your people wanted to stay out of the affairs of man, but my people felt it wrong to watch the corruption of the world. Our race split off and came to guard this forest. Back in its younger days, it was a much larger forest and quite beautiful. However, the demons tainted the land in hopes of killing beast and man alike. My people fought hard and repelled the demons, but the land was already doomed to rot from the demon's touch. They tried everything to fix the forest, but nothing seemed to work."
"Finally, the great village elder found an ancient spell that would cleanse the forest of evil. The entire clan would have to sacrifice their mortal and place their souls into the trees. Once merged with the trees, they could absorb the demonic energies from the land, cleanse it, and then release that energy into the air. This would both heal the land and help it to grow back. However, the process was permanent, so once melded with the trees, they would be stuck as living trees. Despite this, my people gave themselves to restore this forest to its former glory."
"Many centuries have passed since then, and the forest is nearly cleansed of the demon's taint. Although my people sacrificed themselves for the sake of the land, they were rewarded for their actions. The goddess Ehlonna, a deity of forests and woodlands, saw what they had given to save the forest. She gave them her blessing and gave a new life to them. Once every ten years, a tree is born with the body of an elf. I am one of those blessed souls born into the life of, as you call us, a wood elf. For all this time, we have stayed and guarded this sacred land. Our numbers may be small, but we are able to commune with the forest and speak to the spirits of our elders here."
Nolder had listened with much passion and sorrow at the story he was told. He couldn't believe that a whole people would willingly give up everything to save a place. He knew that if they were willing to do that to save a forest, he could make any sacrifice of himself to bring back his family. Noldor looked over at the wood elf and asked her, "Will you allow us to pass through unharmed? I have a great journey ahead of me, and I wish to get through here as fast as possible." The wood elf didn't seem to pay any mind to his statement because she seemed to be working with something. As to not offend her, Noldor simply waited for her response.
Noldor waited for quite some time while the wood elf focused on something. He caught a glimpse here and there, and she seemed to be doing something with a piece of wood. After what felt like forever to Noldor, the wood elf turned around and approached him. In her hands, she held a beautiful looking longbow. She reached out and seemed to be handing to Noldor. "This bow is crafted from one of my people. It is a strong weapon full of great spiritual power." The elf wasn't sure of what to think of this gesture. "I... I don't understand. I just wished to pass through the forest, and I have done you no great honor. We are simply pa-"
The wood elf held her hand up and interrupted Noldor. "We have watched you and heard your story from since you entered these sacred woods. Like my ancestors, you are willing to sacrifice yourself in order to fulfill a greater good. The elder trees were impressed by your virtuousness, so they gave of their limbs to craft this bow. They wish for your journey to be a successful one." The wood elf finally set the longbow in Noldor's hands and turned to walk away. "Good luck young elf. May your journey come to a good end." And before Noldor could get another word in, the wood elf was gone.
Noldor wanted to ask the wood elf more questions, but he realized it would be rude to push any more. They gave him this great and powerful gift, and he wasn't about to dishonor their generosity. With the longbow in hand, he quickly returned to the campsite. The elf figured the rest of the group might still be asleep and tried to enter their site quietly. However, he hadn't realized just how much time had passed since he left. When he was within the camp's parameter, he saw that Aswane had already gotten up. The old wizard looked up at him and greeted him.
"Good morning Noldor. I see by the longbow in your hands that you have just been blessed by the Wood Elves." Noldor was quite surprised that Master Gramstin had deduced that so quickly. The old man chuckled and said, "By the look of your face, I know what you are thinking. I have met with the very Wood Elves once before. It was a long time ago, and I was quite young and stupid back then. If we get a chance later, we'll have to swap stories. However, we need to focus on getting ready and going now. I'd suggest a quick breakfast so we can make it to Avgard by midday." As Aswane finished talking, Sir Andrew seemed to finally come to attention.
The paladin yawned loudly as he got to his feet. "Morning you two. What's for breakfast?" Noldor pulled out a small loaf of bread and handed it to the paladin. Andrew didn't seem too impressed at first glance, but Andrew had survived on less before. He took the bread and began to eat. Despite it's small size, Andrew only took a few bites before he felt strangely full. As he looked up from the bread, he had noticed the other two were already packing up. "What is this?" Noldor looked up from rolling up the bedrolls. "That is travel bread. You have never heard of it?" Andrew eyed the bread suspiciously and asked again. "What is... it?"

YUP
exit the forest and make it to Avgard
meet Aswane's friend... a monster humanoid but haven't decided what
they talk a bit about stuff and snobby foreshadowing
obtain a map and head out into the mountains
find the cave after quite a bit of searching and maybe fight some monster thing but haven't decided
/end chapter (most likely)

VGBA 16 - Speed Runs

Speed Runs
Never has an album been truer to it's name!

Band - Lame Genie
Sites - Facebook. Bandcamp.
Type of Album - Hardcore Video Game Covers.
Genres - Experimental. Hardcore. Rock. (Kinda wanted to not include any of those periods...)
Favorite Song/Songs - Donkey Kong Country 2 (Dixie Kong Victory Theme)

Review - This is just a random little tidbit I got linked to from one of the various video game bands I follow. (Can't remember who at the moment...) Like I joked at the top, the album's name is pretty true to what it is. It's under seven minutes and covers a large variety of random themes from Nintendo games. A short album like this means I'm going to have to speed run this post!

I realize that sounds stupid/crazy/ridiculous, but it's pretty awesome for what little length it has. Many of the songs aren't even longer than 10 seconds! Despite the length of the songs and album though, there's some pretty awesome and powerful stuff to hear here.

The selection? Full of a variety of both well known (Castlevania, Contra), lesser known (RBI Baseball, Rock And Bullwinkle), and highly surprised by (Friday The 13th, Excitebike). So again.. It's chocked full of a great variety from all kinds of games.

The best part? For what little you hear, it's all really awesome and super powerful. It's like BLAM! ROCK IN YOUR FACE! SO EPIIII- done. It went by so awesomely and so fast that you have to listen to it again and again to get your fix. Seriously, for what little content seems to be here, there's a lot going on.

And really... That's about what I have. It's seven minutes of awesome music, and it's even Pay What You Want! Be a butt and pay nothing. Be an amazing and pay $1. Be crazy ama-za-za-zing and pay $2 or more! GO NUTS AND PAY ALL YOUR MONEY! (That'd be cool of you, but don't go that nuts.) So stop reading this and go download that album RIGHT NOW.

Pros - Great variety. Quick and awesome. Pay what you want. Nintendo Experimental Hardcore Rock.
Cons - It's super short. We're looking at less than 7 minutes. But pay what you want so get over it!

Side Note - And at the time of this writing, I just now realized they had a full album as well. Going to buy that soon!

Recurring RPG Review #6 - Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars

Now, I will openly admit that the following game hasn't been fully beaten, but I have played enough of it to give an honest opinion about. So without further ado... Let's do this!

Recurring Fantasy Recurring RPG Review Proudly Presents
#6 Conception II - Children of the Seven Stars

Now, I could drone on and on about all the details on this game, but I'm going to try and keep fairly compact about this game. We'll stick to my normal format, but I will also try to get to the point. Of course, I'll still include my usual opening bit...

Throughout my lifetime, I've changed my opinions on many things. For this particular course, I'm going to just say I'm referring to anime in general. I used to really enjoy it (around seven-ish years ago), but I haven't had as much interest as of late. However, upon one of my usual visits to GameStop, I was informed of this interesting but hilariously named title "Conception II".

I went ahead and reserved the game on a whim because outside of the humor derived from what little I knew... I was interested in the actual game and gameplay. (More towards obvious elements than I care to admit.) The game came out mid-2013 in Japan, but America didn't get it until April of 2014. This isn't really a surprise considering the kind of game and the content contained within... But enough about these exterior details, let's hope right into the game.

The art and look of the game is... nothing special I'm afraid. It's very nice and appealing to look at, but I'm not going to go out and worship the art or remember it fondly in the rear view mirror of my mind. Here's three examples of what you see throughout the game.

Exploring a dungeon.
Average speaking cutscene.
Fighting enemies in battle!

This isn't just me hating on the anime style. I enjoy the anime style, but it's not really anything special. It doesn't have a look or style that's particularly unique to the game. It's pretty enough to look at, but it makes me think of games like Persona, Tales of series, OR basically any other JRPG on the market. I enjoy the varying character designs, but even they look pretty generic in general.

The game has an assortment of music as well... You'll hear all of the ten tracks over and over again while you play through. It's the basic assortment of tracks here, and they all tend more towards a mixture Pop (for not tense situations) and Rock (tense situations). It's good enough music and pretty catchy at times, but it's also a pretty small assortment. If you don't get attached, you probably won't enjoy your time here.

So to wrap that up nicely, it looks good and sounds good, but nothing ever really jumped out and grabbed me. This area of the game review is going to probably either make you nod in agreement or curse me to hell. I'm not trying to say it's bad (because it isn't), but it is also far from being anything I'd call truly amazing. You're going to love it for being what it is, or dislike it and agree with me because I'm not just shouting at how amazing it is. Enough about that. Let's get on to...

THE STORY! For the JRPG, this is pretty much the core reason of why I play them. I mean.. I like the gameplay, but I tend to get more wrapped up in the story bits and wish to continue for more story. Characters can be a great driving force too of course. Now, I haven't fully finished the game, so I can't give a true "loved/hated the story", but I can grade it for what I've seen and experienced. The story gets a bit complex (even for as little distance as I got), so I'm going to try and shorten it as much as possible.

You begin the game with the main character, Wake. The world is a strange place. There are dark zones of the world called Dusk Circles where monsters are produced. They escape these zones and attack people. Some teenagers gain a mark upon reaching a certain age, but it disappears by the time they reach adulthood. Thus the teenagers are the only ones capable of truly fighting the monsters. On top of all this, your character is able to produce an energy that allows people to fight within the Dusk Circles. (Thus he is labelled a God's Gift and pretty much instant celebrity.)

Upon being called "God's Gift", you are sent into the Dusk Circles to destroy whatever is producing the monsters. There's more story inbetween it all, but in all honesty, this game is less about the overarching story and more about the characters involved. It has its share of "DUN DUN DUUUUUNNN" moments, but it's more about building a relationship with the various ladies in the game. So... in the end, it's more of a dating sim with dungeon exploration and turn-based battles.

The characters should be the larger focus here, but I'd like to say that none of them are very deep or interesting if you ask me. True, I haven't finished the game, but they all fight fairly typical archetypes for this style of game. There's the smart ones, the airheads, big boobs, little boobs, tiny angry girl, weird girl, pure girl... If you name it, the game probably features it. And the relationships with these various girls has multiple affects on the game. Whoever you bond the most with is supposed to affect whichever ending you go for, but it also affects... "Classmating."

"Classmating" is where your character joins his energy with the energy of high ranked female students in order to create Star Children to fight off the monsters. It sounds dirty, the cutscenes make them appear dirty, but it's not what you think at all. Classmating is to create your army of Star Children in order to fight monsters. However, there's a lot of elements to them. I'll go over them more further down.

It's a crazy scenario and interesting enough, but it's also clearly built to make it a High School-style anime scenario. Everything is done via teenagers with their teenager ways and problems. Your guy is all popular with the ladies, and you talk to them and build relationships. It reminds me of Persona, but it's not nearly as interesting or deep as any of the games in that series.

So my honest opinion? The story matches up with my opinion on the graphics and sound of the game. It's good and all, but there's nothing there that makes me feel special or want to really get into the game. There are those who enjoy and probably just ADORE this game, but I can't say that I am one of them. True, I could continue through the game and find that special something that makes me go "Wow, I just needed the full experience here!", but I don't see that happening anytime soon. It's time to push on through to the last quality that could exist here... GAMEPLAY!

Gameplay is the king of games. If there isn't some form of playing being done, you're probably watching an interactive film. (Nothing against those... I'd just rather have an actual game.) Conception II does come with actual gameplay though! As I described above, the game is a mixture of...

  • 1 Part Dungeon Crawler
    • Randomized dungeons
    • Enemies on the map
  • 1 Part RPG
    • Party Building through Classmating
    • Lots of turn-based battles
    • Levels for gaining stats
    • Equipment and such
  • 1 Part Dating Sim
    • Selection of ladies
    • Events with ladies
    • Relationships with ladies
    • I guess we know the kind of audience these games are for...
      • Hint: It's probably men.
That gives you the basic details up above. I'm sad to make it that simplified, but that covers the majority there. Now to put that into actual words and review it...

Sadly, I bring up the case that this greatly reminds me of the Persona series (or the games I have played in it at least). You have two parts of the game. You are either 1. walking through normal society and building relationships which lead to 2. exploring dungeons and fighting monsters to save the world. While the game does perform both parts well enough, I still feel like there's a better game for each element both together and separately.

The exploring of the regular world has been pretty chopped down. You aren't actually walking around and simply have a menu in front of you. You visit random locations, talk up the ladies, buy stuff, accept missions, buy other things, set up your party, and a bit more. Of course, your relationship with said ladies builds into the Classmating feature which... Well let's just simplify it.

Better Relationship -> More Powerful Star Children -> Easier Times Through the Dungeons

That's the most basic form. I will say that the Star Children production is easily the funniest part of the game. Trying to build more and better Star Children while also unlocking all the different classes. Most of the classes are available from the start, and the Star Child simply has to have a compatible array of stats to build into whatever class you want. More classes become available later through the usage of special items. I'm all about building characters in games like this. Unfortunately... You can't get attached.

Each Star Child has a maximum level, and of course they're good up until a point but then... You need higher level children and release the children out into the wilds of the town! (Fairly serious here.) This levels up your city and allows for new products and new places to be built. It's almost funny if you think about it. You build up an army of children, raise them into their max potential, and then abandon them when you need new ones with better potential. However, it also means you have to constantly re-level a new group of children to keep going. This gets tedious after a while and really drags the game back.

The town side of the game has your equipment and team building right next to the story and character relation building. The character events are generally fun and entertaining though and easily the best part of the town half. Then you venture off into the dungeon half...

In the dungeons, you explore a randomized dungeon full of see-able monsters. You can avoid them, but as most dungeon games go, avoiding them just leads to future problems of not having enough levels or decent equipment. I do enjoy being able to avoid battles when I can though. So I'll give that an ups. The randomized dungeon part though... I'm really not a huge fan of it. I realize it's to keep the dungeons fresh and new, but it also means exploring every path and possibly running into a dead end after a huuuge walk down the wrong way. It's exploring and experience building but also time wasting.

Then you have the battles. Your team is composed of the Parent Team (Wake and one female companion) plus three Star Children teams (three Star Children per set). The interesting idea done here is combining each team's stat into one pile of stats. Meaning that their HP and MP add up to be the entire team's HP/MP rather than having a huge pile of bars and meters. It works out in the game's favor quite a bit. And remember the classes bit with the Star Children? Well, this is where you get interesting results!

Depending on their levels, elements, and move sets, Star Children have a possibility of combing them to create new, more powerful moves! It's pretty cool and can lead to some awesome magic attacks! Of course... Unless you know what combines with what, you will be trying a lot of trial and error to find a great combo. There's a cool element to it, but what with the disposable aspect of your Star Children... Those builds can be quite short lived. Let's talk about the actual battles.

You encounter enemies anywhere from one to four enemies (as far as I could tell). You are arranged on a 3x3 grid with each square occupied by an enemy. Your teams circle an enemy and can move around the grid, but can only occupy a square with an enemy. You move around the enemy in attempts to avoid its attacks and hit its weak side. Every enemy has at least one weak side of their body to attack. There's a lot of strategy to employ in the battles what with moving around and the various elements available. It doesn't skimp on these details at all, and once again, they work in favor of the game.

So the downside to battles? Pretty much the same downside to any JRPG turn-based battle system. They can be fun and interesting at first, but after a few hundred battles, you just go through the motions. Blast the enemies, run into another one, blast him, another one, blast. Etc. There are cool strategies to enact, but they aren't very necessary early on. I imagine the battles grow greater in intensity later, but with proper planning, they probably lean towards the same formula. I can't really give the game a negative with the battles though since a lot of RPGs gain this feeling from me.

All in all, the gameplay is probably the strongest portion of the game for me. It's your average RPG style, but it does it well. You explore dungeons, fight monsters, earn money and levels. It does those right. Sure it gets a tad repetitive after a while, but what game doesn't? The town/social portion of the game is enjoyable enough, but taking away the ability to truly explore kills a lot of it for me. It speeds up this process, but you lose a sense of adventure and exploration outside of the dungeons. Let's wrap this review up.

In retrospect, I complain about many aspects that make this game what it is. Is that wrong? A bit yes. I mean... I went into this game knowing partially what it was, but I guess I wanted more out of it than what it delivered. The graphics and sound in the game aren't anything to scoff at, but they could have done better and more. The story and characters truly follow in the same way I'm afraid. They are what they are, but just because you can do stereotypical characters doesn't mean you should nor does it make it right. Everybody fits such a cookie cutter shape that it's hard to enjoy them beyond the scope of the game itself. Granted, I didn't follow the game through to the end, so it's possible that everything grew beyond what I saw. At the same time... I doubt it.

Thankfully for the game, the gameplay does stand out. Comparative to the other two aspects, this one does stand out a bit more. It's fairly consistent and interesting enough mechanics going on. Relationship building leads to dungeon success. There's a huge variety of teams you can make, and the different kinds of classes all have their strengths and weaknesses. For someone who likes to create their own teams and classes (like me), this is a big bonus. It's partnered up with the random dungeon exploration and see-able monsters for a nice touch. Lots of grinding to be had! But in the end...

My Final Score - 4 out of 10

I realize this puts the game at a pretty low end, but it should be obvious. This game is clearly built for a specific kind of person. I could forgive that element if there weren't games out there that are built in a similar fashion but better games overall. I could suggest any of the Persona series (particularly 3 or 4) over this title. Both suggestions are more readily available as well whereas Conception II is limited to the 3DS and PS Vita. If one of the elements had been built up a bit better (aesthetics or story/characters), I could have bumped the score up more. However, I stand by what I say. A decent game, but you can find better ones available.

I hope you've taken this opinion to heart and those of you who like the game... Don't hate me.
